For my mom's gift, I scanned and transcribed her great-grandmother's handwritten recipe book. I just made some sugar cookies that she wrote down sometime close to 100 years ago, and likely haven't been made in decades.
This is Esther Meling. She escaped the 2013 South Sudan civil war with her children. Slept in parks in Uganda while working as a dishwasher. She overcame poverty, and is now a baker and a business woman in Uganda. And has a great smile.
